On Sunday, 18 May, Birmingham was filled with the vibrant colours of Ukrainian embroidery, songs and warmth — that’s how we celebrated World Vyshyvanka Day together with the wonderful Ukrainian community in the West Midlands.
The event, organised in collaboration with Bosnia UK Network and the West Midlands Ukrainian Community, became a true celebration of our identity. Ukrainian culture in the UK came alive through embroidered shirts, songs, poetry, traditional food and heartfelt conversations.
The celebration brought together not only the local Ukrainian community but also esteemed guests:
🟦 Ken Wood, Lord Mayor of Birmingham 🟨 Simon Foster, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner 🟦 Rashad Mahmood, Councillor for Birmingham
Their presence confirmed the importance of our culture and the contribution Ukrainians make to local life.
A particular source of pride for us was the participation of young people from the Kryla Youth Club. For the first time, our boys and girls stepped onto the stage — and although they were very nervous, it was incredibly powerful. They were sincere, inspired and beautiful — true ambassadors of Ukrainian fashion in the UK and a shining example of youth resilience. Their eyes sparkled with excitement and joy, and each step was filled with love for their heritage.
💙 Anastasiia Malysh, Team Lead of Kryla Youth Club, captured the hearts of guests with her singing. Her performance of Ukrainian songs became a deeply emotional highlight of the evening — a voice that speaks of the strength and tenderness of young people who remain connected to their homeland.
In addition to the catwalk and concert, guests enjoyed: 💛 An exhibition of embroidered shirts — both modern and vintage, each with its own story; 💙 A market of Ukrainian books, jewellery and souvenirs; 💛 Traditional Ukrainian dishes; 💙 Photo zones and warm, atmospheric images that will remind us of this day for a long time.
And more — new friendships, heartfelt conversations, tears of joy and the feeling: we are not alone. The vyshyvanka is not just clothing. It’s a symbol. A code. A legacy and pride we carry through generations.
Heartfelt thanks to the organisers, partners, Bosnia House and everyone who made this special event happen.
This celebration once again proved: Ukrainians in the UK are a strong, active and inspired community. And our youth — they are its beautiful future.
Ukrainians in the West Midlands — together we preserve our culture, memory and the strength of our nation, wherever we are.
