Sports Day for International Children’s Day

On 1 June 2024, we celebrated International Children’s Day in Birmingham with a real sports explosion. It was a joyful and active festival for Ukrainian children in the UK, and it turned out to be absolutely amazing.

The event brought together over 30 children and 8 teenage volunteers from the Ukrainian community in the West Midlands. Every single one of them went home with a big smile.

There was so much energy, laughter, movement, and team spirit. The children didn’t just compete. They made new friends, learned how to work together, supported one another, and felt proud of every step. Teen volunteers guided the little ones, calmed nerves before the races, and made sure everything stayed fair and fun. They learned what it means to lead with kindness, and it showed in every smile they received in return.

The day’s programme was full of fun: running, relays, jumping, ball games. All of it took place with loud cheers and applause from the parents. The whole atmosphere was warm, energetic, and joyful. It was exactly what a Ukrainian family celebration in the UK should feel like.

The parents brought just as much energy as the children. Their excitement was incredible. At times, it felt like they were ready to jump in and take part themselves. That’s why we promised to hold a Family Sports Day soon, where grown-ups will also have their moment to shine.

A huge thank you goes to our professional coach, Taras. He turned a simple children’s sports day into a bright and adventurous celebration. His energy, charisma, and ability to connect with both kids and adults made the day truly unforgettable.

Of course, no one left empty-handed. Every child received prizes and small gifts. But more importantly, they left with positive memories, emotional connection, and the joy of feeling part of something bigger. It was a day full of laughter, movement, and moments they will remember.

This event showed that even far from home, Ukrainian celebrations for children in the UK can still feel meaningful. We created a space full of care, joy, and community spirit. It reminded us that childhood should be active, happy, and full of support.

And yes, we’ll definitely do it again. Because the happiness in children’s eyes is worth everything.
