KIC Radio Podcast: Voices of Ukrainian Teens in the UK

One of the most inspiring moments of our summer has just wrapped up — a brilliant youth media project by Kryla Youth Club in collaboration with KIC Radio UK. It was more than just a radio show. It was a journey into creativity, confidence, and community for young Ukrainians finding their feet in the UK.

Picture this: a professional radio studio, real mics, a buzzing tech setup — and live broadcasts where teens shared their stories, thoughts, and dreams. For most, it was their first time behind the mic. There were nerves and laughter, scriptwriting, team debates, even a few disagreements — and somehow, it all came alive on air.

They spoke about real and meaningful topics: life in a new country, school challenges in the UK, Ukrainian identity, hopes, fears, and dreams. They shared their experience and tips with other young refugees. It felt like a little journey — full of surprises, teamwork, and energy. And when the show ended, emotions were flying high.

But this wasn’t just about what happened in the studio. The whole experience — from riding together to the station, chatting in the car, planning episodes on the go, supporting one another — became something bigger. The conversations were so deep and alive, it often felt like we were already broadcasting before we even arrived.

“We saw that our voices matter. That we can share our thoughts, inspire others, and be heard.”

This youth radio project gave our teens much more than just media experience. It helped them build confidence, communication skills, public speaking abilities, and the courage to speak up. Many also felt something even more valuable — a sense of belonging and importance, which is crucial for young refugees adapting to life in a new country.

It also sparked new friendships, team spirit, and personal growth. For some, it even opened doors to thinking about future careers in media, journalism, or creative industries.

Above all, this was an example of how creative projects help Ukrainian youth in the UK integrate, express themselves, and feel empowered. Through radio, they were able to explore their identities and be proud of their voice.

Thanks to the incredible team at KIC Radio UK for opening the door. This is what integration looks like — not just settling in, but shining.
