Ivan Kupala Day – Celebrating Summer Solstice

On Sunday, June 22, 2025, Cannon Hill Park came alive with laughter, wildflower wreaths, and the delicious aroma of homemade pastries — as we celebrated Summer Solstice, or Ivan Kupala Day, under the open sky. It was a day when nature, culture, and human connection wove together into one beautiful story.

The event was supported by Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham and Birmingham City Council and became part of Refugee Week — a time to reflect on belonging, resilience, and the many ways people create new roots far from home.

Friends and families shared food, made wreaths, danced in circles, and watched their children jump over an imaginary bonfire with glowing smiles. The bonfire was symbolic, but the joy was real.

Then came 30 minutes of Laser Tag madness! For most of the children, it was their first time — and the energy in the room was electric. Laughter, excitement, strategy, and a healthy bit of competition filled the space.

💛 What made the day special wasn’t just the celebration — but everything that happened in between:
  • The quiet passing down of traditions to the younger generation.

  • The spontaneous conversations that turned into new friendships.

  • The trust and comfort found in familiar songs, shared meals, and open-hearted laughter.

These are the moments that remind us why such gatherings matter. Because from them, communities grow — not just in numbers, but in connection. Culture, here, isn’t just remembered. It’s lived, shared, and strengthened.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who joined us, and to those who believe in the importance of events like this. Sometimes, support comes not in loud declarations, but in creating space for something genuine to happen.
