Last Sunday, we hosted a Business Grants and Funding Workshop — a warm and productive networking event for Ukrainians planning to start or already running a business in the UK.
With more than 20 attendees, the session brought together aspiring and current refugee entrepreneurs for a practical conversation about navigating the UK’s financial landscape — especially when your immigration status adds extra layers of uncertainty. We explored various funding options available for people on the Homes for Ukraine scheme, including grants, alternative finance opportunities, and support schemes.
We also covered something many often overlook: building and improving your credit score in the UK — a key step if you’re planning to apply for a loan, rent a business space, or even sign up for essential business tools.
Participants learned about:
- Grants available in the region
- Credit-building strategies
- Alternative and innovative ways to fund a business — even when traditional routes feel out of reach
One of the highlights of the evening was a guest session with Rizwana X Kausar from the West Midlands Business Hub, who shared invaluable insights about local business support services, upcoming opportunities, and where to look for funding beyond traditional routes.
Migrants often face unique barriers to business, from legal limitations to a lack of local networks. But events like this remind us that community, information, and connection are powerful tools.
Our goal is to build a growing network of refugee professionals, creatives, and entrepreneurs in Birmingham. We support each other in moving from uncertainty to independence. And was just one of many events we’re running as part of our business support programme.
Join us for:
- Practical workshops on legal structures, marketing, and taxes
- Speaking Club for Work and Business
- Mentoring sessions with local and migrant business leaders
Together, we’re proving that refugees can thrive as business owners in the UK with the right support, knowledge, and community.
