Helping Birmingham Youth Prepare for University and Financial Independence

Starting university is about much more than just passing exams and choosing a course — it is the beginning of adult, financially independent life. That is why on 26th May we hosted an intensive and highly practical Uni Ready Workshop for young people aged 14 to 23. The event took place in Birmingham, aiming to eliminate the fear of the unknown. We wanted to equip future students with the clear financial tools and insights needed for a successful start in the UK higher education system. 

Inside the Session

To deliver the best possible guidance, we teamed up with the amazing team from MoneyReady — an organisation that specialises in financial literacy for youth. Thanks to their interactive approach and real-life examples, complex financial structures were broken down into simple, actionable steps. Together with the attendees, we explored five core areas: 

  1. How Student Finance Works: Navigating the intricacies of Tuition Fee and Maintenance Loans in England, including the actual terms of repayment. 

 
  2. UCAS Application Journey: A step-by-step breakdown of how to register, apply to universities, and submit applications with confidence. 

 
  3. Real Student Expenses: Discussing the actual cost of student living (rent, groceries, transport) and how to budget smartly to prevent financial stress. 

 
  4. Part-Time Jobs During Studies: Balancing work and lectures effectively, exploring where to find student-friendly jobs, and managing time efficiently. 


  5. Loans and Credit: Learning when borrowing is a calculated financial decision and when it is best to stay away to avoid debt traps. 

 

What Outcomes Did We Achieve?

The workshop was a lively, engaging dialogue full of useful discussions. Based on the feedback and interactions, we achieved fantastic results: 
 

  • Clear Action Plan: Participants shared that after the session, the UCAS and Student Finance processes stopped looking like a confusing maze. 

 
  • Debunking Credit Myths: The youth learnt to critically assess financial options.

  • Peer Networking: Beyond gaining knowledge, attendees connected with other young people in Birmingham who are on the exact same path, fostering a stronger sense of community and mutual support.
