The launch of “Old Memories”

We invite you to something truly special.

The launch of “Old Memories” is not just an event. It is a journey across generations, a conversation between the past and the present, and a story of connection, loss, and hope.

This book was created by Ukrainian young people together with the older generation — our grandparents, whose childhood and youth unfolded in a completely different world. A world without smartphones, yet full of handwritten letters, simple joys, strong communities, and deep-rooted traditions.

Then, in 2022, everything changed.

War forced thousands of Ukrainian families to leave their homes and rebuild their lives in the United Kingdom. They arrived with suitcases — but what they carried within them mattered far more: memories of home, the taste of familiar dishes, songs passed down through decades, traditions shared across generations, and stories that could not be left behind.

This is how “Old Memories” came to life — a collaborative project by Kryla and North Birmingham for Ukraine, a community initiative that has been supporting Ukrainian families from the very beginning, helping them settle, rebuild, and feel a sense of belonging.

Young people aged 12 to 21 met with members of the older generation — they listened, asked questions, laughed, and sometimes cried, carefully gathering fragments of lives that might otherwise have been lost in time. They wrote these stories in their own words and selected photographs that bring each memory vividly to life.

This book is not only about the past.

It is about connection — between generations, between cultures, between who we were and who we are becoming. It is about preserving something deeply human at a time when so much has been broken and displaced.

We were deeply moved to share this moment with around 70 guests — people who came not simply to attend an event, but to listen, to feel, and to become part of this story.

Because when we understand the lives of those who came before us, we begin to better understand ourselves.

We invite you to step into this world — to walk alongside our grandparents, to feel their joys and challenges, and to discover the quiet strength and deep love they carry for their homeland, Ukraine.

Join us, and take this journey back in time.
